ECP Ordos Study Trip Held Successfully

ACCA21&ECP Joint Ordos Outreach Study Trip on Energy Transaction & Cooperation

From 16th to 18th August 2023, with the support from Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21 (ACCA21), ECP invited and organized an international energy companies delegation, including Baker Hughes, ConocoPhillips, AspenTech, Emerson, Saudi Aramco, Howden, Rio Tinto, and went to Ordos, Inner Mongolia for a study trip theme on low-carbon energy transition and green cooperation. This study trip program was supported by the Institute of Energy of Peking University and the Ordos Research Institute of Energy of Peking University.  A key team from ACCA21 also participated/supported the study trip, Director General Huang Jing, Division Director Zhang Xian, Deputy Director Wang Shunbing, and key staff Yang Nian of Social Development Department. 

ECP and ACCA21 Center jointly planned and organized this study trip, including a half day Energy Transition and Cooperation Workshop and six site visits on Talent Center of Science and Innovation, Ordos Energy Research Institute of Peking University, Shenhua CCS demonstration site, Sinosynergy Power and the factory and Envision energy and energy storage system Ordos Carbon Zero Park. 

The Joint Ordos Study Trip is a learning, sharing, and exploring journey.  The delegation learned the current development status of Inner Mongolia, particularly the cooperation new areas and opportunities in energy sector, shared their insights and best practices in global energy transition and green low carbon development, as well as tried to explore the cooperation opportunities in China energy market.  

After the trip, participated member company representatives expressed that they would like to continue to pay attention to the new trend and opportunities in energy sector, and of course seize the business cooperation opportunities in China and in Ordos during energy traction.  

Energy Transaction is a main trend for many major provinces/regions.  ECP has been focusing on regional/provincial energy transaction and cooperation opportunities for years.  Under China’s “Dual Carbon” target, ECP and member companies are welcomed by regional partners and clients to share their international expertise and know-how on energy transaction and low carbon technologies and solutions.  We hope ECP can continue to play the important platform to promote international energy cooperation at regional level in selected energy regions.  

Energy Transition and Cooperation Workshop

As one important session of this Ordos study trip, the Energy Transition and Cooperation Workshop was successfully held on August 17th morning.  At the workshops, participants tried to catch the new opportunities for the international energy transition and economic restructuring. The workshop provides an interactive communication platform for international and local Ordos companies. With the support of Ordos Municipal Government, Institute of Energy of Peking University, and the Ordos Research Institute of Energy of Peking University, the workshop brought together over 60 attendees who are enterprise executives, experts, scholars, and policy makers to have an in-depth discussion on energy transition, which further expands the space for cooperation. At the same time. It also puts forward solutions for the technical problems Ordos faced in the process of energy transition and stimulates the innovation vitality of the industry. 

  • Director General of ACCA21, Huang Jing, pointed out that Inner Mongolia, as an important energy and strategic resource base in China, has long been dominated by coal in energy consumption. While guaranteeing national energy security, it also shoulders the important mission of promoting green transformation. Ordos plays an important role in the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin, and actively promotes the green upgrading of coal and natural gas. It enhances the clean and efficient use of energy, and constructs the "wind, solar, hydrogen, storage and vehicle" industrial cluster and its innovation in sustainable development is highly potential.
  • ECP Cochair Cao Yang,also the Global Vice President and China president of Baker Hughes mentioned in his opening remarks, ECP has been focusing on international cooperation opportunities in the field of energy at the national and sub-national level. It has been cooperating with Inner Mongolia, in particular Ordos, for a long time and paid several visits to Inner Mongolia with representatives of international energy enterprises to carry out technical and industrial exchange and forums on different topics, such as the green data centre, natural gas and clean coal etc. This workshop will further help international energy enterprises to better understand the local energy status and cooperation opportunities in Inner Mongolia and Ordos, discuss the international energy transition trend and the latest low-carbon advanced technologies, to carry out practical exchanges and business cooperation in the field of energy.
  • Dr. Paige Marie, Global Sustainability Officer of Aspen Tech, delivered a keynote speech on the topic of "Digital Solutions for Energy Transformation”.  Dr. Marie pointed out that there would still a lot to be done in hydrogen and carbon capture, and that every step of the process is supported by digitization. With the help of AI, more comprehensive models will be built to optimize services and ensure energy security.
  • Dr. Wang Honggang, State-appointed expert of the Energy Storage Centre of the National Energy Low Carbon Institute (NELCI), shared low-carbon technologies. With the support of energy business, NELCI promotes technical achievements to generate greater social value. Wang also said that China and the United States have the largest economic volume and the largest carbon emissions, so the two sides should join hands to achieve low-carbon development, making contributions to the future of mankind.
  • Zhao Dong, Emerson's Sustainability expert, shared the company's ESG low-carbon development strategy: Green Action: Emerson aims for sustainable development and strategic transformation; Green Solutions: Emerson applies its own technology to help customers complete low-carbon transformation; Green Collaboration: Emerson aims to bring together enterprises and research institutes to jointly promote green transformation.
  • Professor Li Jia from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) talked about her nearly two decades of experience in the CCUS field and made an in-depth comparison of several key industry carbon emitters, including power plants, steel mills, cement factories, and chemical factories, and proposed an emission plan for different sources. Finally, Professor Li raised three issues including the schedule for power plants emission reduction, carbon capture in key industries, and carbon capture in the air, which will expand the room for more discussion and cooperation among the industry enterprises and units. 
  • Mr. Zhang Xian, Director of Social Affairs of ACCA21, hosted a roundtable discussion with Mr. Wang Mingpei, President of Ordos Carbon Neutral Research Institute, Mr. Hao Hongliang, Vice President of Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy, Mr. Hu Fengxu, Deputy General Manager of Inner Mongolia Baosteel Low Carbon Company and Mr. Wang Yongsheng, Engineer of Shenhua Ordos Coal-to-Oil Branch Company. They shared their views on the challenges and opportunities brought by the energy transition and the dual-carbon technological innovations and demands.

Site visits on Energy Research and Innovation, CCUS, Hydrogen, and Energy Storage

  • In the afternoon of August 16th, the delegation visited Ordos Talent Center of Science and Innovation which is the largest one in Northwest China, and the Ordos Research Institute of Energy of Peking University.  The city of Ordos has worked hard to implement the "talents in Ordos" and "innovation-driven development" strategies, striving to create a first-class talent hub in northern China.  
  • On the afternoon of August 17th, the delegation visited Shenhua CCS Demonstration Project and had a discussion with the leaders and engineers of Shenhua Ordos Coal-to-Oil Branch Company.  Shenhua CCUS project is the first Chinese pilot-scale demonstration for CO 2 deep saline aquifer storage in combination with direct coal liquefaction (DCL) production. The injection site is geographically situated in the Chenjiacun village of Wulam Len town, about 40 km southeast of the Ordos city.
  • On August 18th, the delegation visited the Ordos Zero-carbon industry park, the world's first zero-carbon industrial park.  Due to its abundant renewable energy resources and smart grid system, which can achieve low-cost and efficient production and use of renewable energy, Ordos announced this zero-carbon industry park project in 2021 and the park will focus on the development of the two trillion-yuan industries of electric vehicles and new energy. Leading renewable company like Envision, Longji, and Sinosynergy are stated to plan and build their production base or business lines in the park.  
    • The delegation visited Meijin-Sinosynergy Industrial Park. Meijin-Sinosynergy Hydrogen Technology Industrial Park is a national demonstration zone for the hydrogen industry jointly constructed, under a strategic cooperation agreement, by Ordos Ejin Horo Banner People's Government and the enterprise alliance formed between Sinosynergy, Shanxi Meijin Energy Co., Ltd. and some other leading enterprises.
    • The delegation also visited the Ordos Envision Net-Zero Industrial Park as the last stop of the study trip.  Envision is the key initiator for this zero-carbon industry park idea.  Envision partnered with the city of Ordos in 2021 to start build this park.
